What each material actually is
Soft PVC is a flexible vinyl compound, plastified to a rubbery feel. It is injected into a steel mould and cures into a dense, slightly rigid part that holds crisp edges and vivid spot colours. Think keychains, 3D figures, fridge magnets and luggage tags.
Silicone (the food-grade platinum-cured type we mould) is a synthetic rubber. It stays flexible across a very wide temperature range, is inert and food-safe, and survives repeated flexing without fatigue. Think wristbands, kitchenware, tool nameplates and damper parts.
Where soft PVC wins
- Cost per unit. PVC is generally the cheaper option at volume, which is why it dominates giveaways and retail premiums.
- Colour punch. Up to 8 moulded spot colours with hard edges — ideal for logos that need to read at a glance.
- Rigid-ish detail. It holds fine 3D relief and small features better than a very soft rubber would.
Where silicone wins
- Temperature. Our platinum-cured silicone holds from −40 °C to 230 °C continuous — it goes near heat and into dishwashers where PVC would soften.
- Food and skin contact. Silicone is the material you reach for when the part touches food, drink or bare skin for long periods.
- Endless flex. Silicone absorbs vibration and repeated bending without cracking, which is why it is the right call for wristbands and dampers.

How we help buyers decide
The question is never "which is better" but "what does this part do". A conference lanyard charm that sits in a pocket is perfect in PVC; a wristband worn 24/7 or a spoon that goes in a dishwasher needs silicone. We walk through the end use, the environment and the budget with you before we quote a material — not the other way round. See our custom PVC keychains and silicone wristbands for the two families side by side.
FAQ
Is one material cheaper than the other?
Soft PVC is usually the lower-cost choice at volume because the compound is cheaper and cycle times are short. Silicone costs more per part but earns it where heat, food contact or flex life rule out PVC.
Can silicone go in the dishwasher?
Yes. Platinum-cured food-grade silicone handles dishwasher and boiling-water temperatures without warping, which is why we use it for kitchenware and drinkware branding.
Which gives sharper logo detail?
Both hold crisp relief; PVC tends to hold very fine rigid detail a touch better, while silicone excels at soft, flexible shapes. For microtext and certification symbols, mould accuracy is ±0.01 mm either way.
Can I mix materials in one order?
Often yes — many promo programmes pair a PVC keychain with a silicone wristband. Tell us the mix and we will plan tooling and production together.
Minimum order and lead time?
100 pieces per design for either material; sampling 5–7 days, production 12–30 days after artwork approval. 3D modelling is free before any steel is cut.
